Kelowna Actors Studio Presents Nunsense! It's Habit Forming...
Nunsense started out as a cabaret act in New York City and spawned into an international sensation, complete with six sequels and a staggering 3,672 performances Off-Broadway (and winning four Outer Critics Circle Awards).
Nunsense, with book, music and lyrics by Dan Goggin, begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidently poisoned 52 of the sisters. With four nuns in the freezer and no funds, the five remaining nuns decide that the best way to raise the money for their burials is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease”.
Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of the Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina, and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amenesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. What ensues is an audience pleasing fun filled show with outrageous songs. Featuring star turns, tap dancing, an audience quiz and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenome”nun”. With more than 5000 productions worldwide.
Many of the nuns who taught me were funny people -- I only recall one who was in any way severe," says author Dan Goggin, "Every nun in the show is based on someone I knew growing up. Of all the people who attend the show, the greatest fans are priests and nuns."
The star studded rosters of actresses that have played these beloved nuns include Rue McClanahan, JoAnne Worley, Phyllis Diller, and Georgia Engle.
Randy Leslie directs and choreographs this fun filled show, with a cast led by Arlene Irwin as Reverend Mother. Irwin has been featured as Julie Jordan in Carousel, Mrs. Harcourt, Anything Goes and Fiona in Brigadoon. Also in the cast of five are Kelly Whelan (Reno, Anything Goes; Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney Todd) as Sister Robert Anne, Delphine Litke (Mrs. Greer, Annie; Mrs. Chumley, Harvey) as Sister Mary Hubert, Gillian Reed (Lily, Annie; Cinderella, Into The Woods) as Sister Mary Amnesia, and Amber Bayani (White Christmas) as Sister Mary Leo. On piano is Sister Mary Roslyn (Roslyn Frantz) who is a part of the action with some great one liners!

Nunsense’s creative team includes producer/special choreographer Nathan Flavel, set designer Rick Worrall, set decor by Norene Morrow, costume designer Hazel Rodgers, sound designer Jordan Leboe, assistant to the director Brandon Shalansky, props by Natasha Beaumont and Stage Manager Carlee Vollhoffer.
