Fairy Tales Rich with Dark Humour
The current production of Into The Woods by the Kelowna Actors Studio has created quite a buzz even just from yesterday’s opening night performance! This show is lining up to be one of the theatre company’s most ambitious and complex productions, and is a not-to-be-missed event!

In typical Kelowna Actors Studio fashion, the show features some truly outstanding young talent and a breathtaking set. It’s a collage of well-known fairy tales, whose characters have a dark edge to them – Cinderella isn’t quite such a keener; Prince Charming is a bit of a Casanova; and Little Red Riding Hood? Well, let’s just say “Red is her colour for more than one reason”. The show is funny, touching, dark, and edgy, and the whole thing is tied together by some truly incredible music by Stephen Sondheim.

In short, this is a show that people will travel to Kelowna to come and see – and they can build a real weekend getaway around it!
The plot goes something like this:
When a baker and his wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack. Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What begins as lively irreverent fantasy in the style of “The Princess Bride” becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
Ah-ha! So it’s got that little bit of a Moral to it, doesn’t it? The whole Be-Careful-What-You-Wish-For routine.

The Kelowna Actors Studio doesn’t just serve up amazing theatre and musicals (this one is a musical). It also serves up yummy dinners – that’s right, dinner theatre. I haven’t seen this one yet, but I’ve been to others and I can truly tell you that sitting in the audience with your glass of wine after dinner is an amazing experience. At intermission, everyone is served dessert, and there’s coffee and tea for those who want it.
The theatre is located on Ellis St., across from the library. I usually park in the Library Parkade right across the street from the theatre – so convenient! Tickets range in price, so here’s their pricing details for your information.
Definitely get out and check out this performance! What a fun date night, or night out with your friends!
