Michener

July 14th to August 7th, 2011

Although well known for its extraordinary score South Pacific is also a deeply felt drama. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an alien culture in wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences in 1949.

Among Broadway’s musical classics, South Pacific has long had a special mystique. An instant critical and popular smash hit when it opened, it swept the Tony awards, won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and ran for a then-extraordinary five years. For a generation of postwar theatregoers, it was cherished like almost no other musical.

Set on a tropical island during World War II, South Pacific tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples (U.S. Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque, and Marine Joe Cable and a young local native girl Liat) and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and their own prejudices. Considered by many to be the finest musical ever written, the score's songs include such musical theatre classics as Some Enchanted Evening, Younger Than Springtime, Bali Ha'i, There is Nothin' Like a Dame and A Wonderful Guy."

- Return to 2010/2011 Season

Stephen Sondheim’s celebrated creation is a new classic for our times.

An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Riding hood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch...who raps? They're all among the cockeyed characters in this fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone's wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results.

What begins as lively irreverent fantasy in the style of "The Princess Bride" becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children with such memorable songs as Children Will Listen, Hello Little Girl, A Very Nice Prince, Giants in the Sky and many more.

- Return to 2010/2011 Season

Charity sings, dances, laughs and cries through romances with the “animal magnetism”, hero, the “ultra chic continental” hero, and the “impossible-to believe-but-he’s-better-than-nothing” type hero.

The tuneful score features such hits as Hey, Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me now, Baby Dream Your Dream and There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This. Originally choreographed by Bob Fosse, snapping fingers, rakishly tilted bowler hats, swiveling hips and white-gloved hand gestures are omnipresent.

- Return to 2010/2011 Season

Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley.

Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and Grandpa the Socialist and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style.

- Return to 2010/2011 Season
